My research primarily focuses on uncovering the human genetic factors underlying susceptibility to infectious diseases, particularly tuberculosis (TB) and COVID-19. I integrate population genomics and bioinformatics approaches to study the genetic architecture of these diseases, especially in African populations. This includes investigating how genetic diversity and population-specific variations influence disease susceptibility and treatment outcomes. I have been involved in several significant projects, including genome-wide association studies (GWAS) in admixed populations and pharmacogenetic research to tailor drug therapy for tuberculosis. Additionally, I contribute to research on host-pathogen interactions and the co-adaptation between Mycobacterium tuberculosis and humans. This research is critical in identifying genetic markers that can inform precision medicine approaches for managing infectious diseases, particularly in resource-limited settings. My recent work has emphasized the need for data harmonization in multi-platform genomic studies and explored the intersection of TB susceptibility with other conditions such as HIV and type-2 diabetes. Importantly, we have developed tools, such as a population-specific reference genome, recombination maps and ancestry informative marker panels. This impacts on all genetic studies of disease in local populations. Furthermore, I collaborate on international initiatives aimed at advancing tuberculosis research, seeking to integrate genetic insights into clinical practice to improve health outcomes.
